Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about AMILGY, our programs, and how you can get involved.

Amil Youth Group (AYG), also known as AMILGY, is a Detroit-based youth development organization dedicated to building safe, clean, and prosperous neighborhoods. Founded in 2011, we work within schools and communities to close the achievement gap through enrichment programs, mentoring, tutoring, robotics, technology literacy, behavior intervention, health awareness, and community beautification. Our dual mission addresses both student achievement in schools and the development of thriving neighborhoods through unification and enrichment programs.

Volunteering with AYG is simple! Visit our Get Involved page and fill out the volunteer sign-up form. You can choose from several areas of interest including tutoring, mentoring, community cleanup, events, and administration. We offer flexible scheduling — whether you can commit to a regular weekly slot or prefer to help at special events, there's a place for you. Our volunteer coordinator will reach out within 48 hours to discuss opportunities that match your skills and availability.

AYG currently works with several Detroit schools and neighborhoods. Our partner schools include Burns Elementary/Middle School, Central Collegiate Academy, Clark Elementary/Middle School, and East English Village. In the community, we serve neighborhoods including Morningside, East English Village, Cornerstone Village, Barton-McFarland, and Dexter/Linwood. At Burns Elementary, we helped increase attendance from 52% to over 90% and decreased discipline referrals by 47%. At Central Collegiate Academy, we decreased the student dropout rate to below 15%.

100% of your donation goes directly to supporting our mission. Funds are allocated across four key areas: Tutoring & Academic Programs (35%) — covering supplies, workbooks, homework hotline resources, and trained tutors; Technology & Robotics (25%) — robotics kits, computers, software licenses, and STEM materials; Community Development (20%) — block cleanups, vacant home board-ups, tree planting, and beautification projects; and Events & Operations (20%) — banquet fundraisers, back-to-school drives, holiday programs, and day-to-day operations. We currently accept donations via Bitcoin for secure, transparent, and instant giving.

We welcome partnerships with nonprofits, schools, corporations, civic organizations, and faith-based groups. Current partners include The Manhood Project, H&S Educational Service, Detroit Human Resource Center, United Way, The Greatness Camp, Greening Detroit, and Young Men of Excellence. To explore a partnership, visit our Partnership page and submit an inquiry form, or contact Charles Hyman directly at charles.hyman@hwschools.org. Partnership benefits include co-branded events, access to our school network, shared impact reporting, collaborative program design, and recognition at our annual banquet fundraisers.
